Gifts for kids

The honest measure of a children's gift is whether it is still in use in February. That rules out most of what is loudest in the shop, and it favours things that can be played with in more than one way.

One courtesy that matters more than the gift itself: ask the parents before anything large, loud, or alive. You are giving something to a household, not just to a child, and the household has to keep it.

  1. Building Block Set

    around $40

The benchmark. Open-ended, survives siblings, still played with years later.

  2. Kids Microscope Set

    around $45

For a specific child who already asks how things work. A poor default, an excellent match.

  3. Illustrated Story Book Set

    around $28

Ask which ones they already own. Duplicates are the most common miss here by a distance.

  4. Night Sky Projector

    around $33

Does its job at bedtime, which is when parents most need something to work.

  5. 1000-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

    around $20

For an older child, and better as something to do together than something to hand over.

  6. Watercolour Paint Set

    around $36

Cheap, genuinely open-ended, and the mess is containable.

  7. Beginner Knitting Kit

    around $29

For a child who has shown they will stay with something. Not a way to find out whether they will.

Children change their minds faster than anyone, which is why a list written in November is already out of date. In Bodhi a parent can text an idea the day it is mentioned, and the rest of the family sees it.
